A smart fortwo is exactly that! A clever micro-mini car that has room for two passengers. But for the layperson there’s more to the car than it’s two seats.

The Smart Car ForTwo was a long-awaited city minicar that’s been causing a commotion since 1998, where its diminutive size, small-displacement engines, and distinct design have given it unique appeal. Initial USA sales exceeded everyone’s expectations.

The smart was available in Europe in 1998. At that time it was called the smart MCC, later it was christened as the smart city coupe and finally renamed the smart fortwo. The car most of American’s are familiar with.

The Smart Car ForTwo comes in three variants, the Pure Coupe, Passion Coupe and Cabriolet.

All three are second generation and were introduced in early October 2010. There is almost no difference among the three, in addition to Passion Cabriolet type of roof can be opened.

One of the advantages of the Smart ForTwo is the body panels that can be dismantled and exchanged pair of colors in accordance with the wishes of the owner. In the latest generation, there are seven color choices body panels, including color doff. Color front spoiler, side and rear can also be customized with body panels to order.

Because of the lack of any main stream marketing it hasn’t been a smashing success when in 2008 was available for sale in the United States. However, the Marines have landed and Mercedes-Benz USA took over United States administration, sales and marketing of its smart brand from Penske, and installed a new marketing team, and has taken steps to help build brand awareness for smart car fortwo, something Penske over looked and part of the reason sales of the smart sank lower in the polls than Dead Ed.

Sadly, Mercedes-Benz USA ad campaign wasn’t anything special and over looked the true advantages and more importantly the cars fun factor!

Smart’s second-generation smart car fortwo is now sold through Mercedes Benz dealerships and has just crossed a major milestone, selling its 500,000th smart worldwide and will finally get a redesign, but not until 2014.

Next year their electric vehicle the smart fortwo electric car will be available in larger numbers.

Smart is expecting continued growth in the coming years thanks to two new products. Smart will launch an electric vehicle of its smart car fortwo city car during the spring of 2012 with an electric ebike to follow sometime during the second quarter of 2012.

Daimler, Mercedes’ German parent, is going to develop the next two-seat Smart in conjunction with Renault, which has to find a replacement for its own tiny car, the Twingo. Renault is a French company and the Smart is built at a plant in France.

The Smart is an ingeniously engineered little car that has gone basically unchanged for more than a decade. Before it was the Smart car, it was the Swatch car, named for the Swiss watchmaker. It has been imported into the U.S. for about three years through Penske Automotive, and now Mercedes Benz USA. Mercedes has launched the first national ad campaign for the car.

Lately, it has been getting more competition, too. Toyota is introducing the Scion iQ, and the Fiat 500, Mini Cooper and others also compete in the smallest-car segment.

Smart is also hinting at a new four-seat model, which won’t show up until 2015. Smart made a four-seater previously, but killed it due to slow sales. Penske had one in the works in a deal with Nissan, but killed it when Mercedes took over the brand.
